In light of COVID-19 we are well aware that Halloween will not be the same as it has in the past. With that being said we would like to offer an alternative that is in compliance with quarantine and social distancing standards.
A Monster Ball.
BNHA's Monster Ball is an exclusive 18+ Boku No Hero Academia horror event and COVID-19 Halloween alternative. It is during this event that artists and writers will come together to present guests with one of a kind fanfiction and artwork centering around Kohei Horikoshi's hit anime and manga as well as the horror genre.

FAQ


What is BNHA’s Monster Ball?
A BNHA Halloween horror event in which fanfiction and art will be released to the public on October 30th and 31st. In the days prior to this release for the month of October additional works will be released weekly. This is our solution to limitations placed on the holiday due to COVID-19.

Is BNHA’s Monster Ball a zine?
No. It is a fandom event. Similar to a bang or exchange.

Will you be accepting mod applicants?
We have hosted mod applications for this event already and made our selections. However we welcome contributors such as writers, artists, merch artists and beta readers when contributor applications become available.

Who are the mods for this event?

Is this event for profit or for charity?
This is a nonprofit event. We are however accepting donations for our COVID-19 charity of choice, Project Hope.

What language does this event support?
English. This is the primary language for most of the mods and thus our choice for communication and pieces that the event may included. Those interested in being apart of the event should have some fluency in this language as well.

Is this event newbie friendly?
Yes. As part of Zine Quest and their mission to educate future creators and contributors this event is open to newcomers.

Is this event SFW or NSFW?
Due to the overall horror theme of this event and its depiction of gore and violence this event has been deemed NSFW.

Are minors allowed to apply for this event?
No. All guests and contributors must be 18+ due to the graphic nature of this event.

How does the idea bank work?
As you may have noticed attached to our interest check is an idea bank. This is simply a collection of ideas submitted by those who filled out the check. Submitted ideas have a chance at being fulfilled by contributors in the form of written works or art as an extra special Halloween treat.

Contributor FAQ

Are there any preliminary requirements for contributor applicants?
Must be 18+
Must have a Twitter or Tumblr Account
Must have a Discord
Must be prepared to provide a minimum of two pitches on application
Must be able to adhere to project schedule

Do I need a discord account?
Yes. A discord server specific to this event will be created and be our primary source of communication.

What are pitches?
Pitches are ideas for a piece of writing or artwork. These include but are not limited to alternate universes and headcanons.

Do I need an AO3 account?
No. An AO3 account is not required however you must have access to some form of fanfiction posting site that does not require an account to read works. We recommend AO3 since all written works will be compiled into a collection there. However others are acceptable.

How many contributors will be accepted?
Currently, for artists and writers, we do not have a set limit for contributors. Contributor acceptance will be based on the quality of the provided samples. Ideally, we do aim to keep the ratio of writers and artists balanced.

What are the contributor roles Drabble Writer and Sketch Artist?
As part of our partnership with Zine Quest we will be introducing two new contributor roles both newbie-friendly, Drabble Writer & Sketch Artist. These roles are geared towards newcomers and first time contributors. You will find that the requirements of these roles are half or significantly less than that of the standard Writer and Artist contributor roles.

How many pieces can we contribute to the event?
All roles are required to submit a minimum of one piece.
Writer: 2 Max
Drabble Writer: 2 Max
Artist: 3 Max
Sketch Artist: 2 Max
If you are interested in contributing more outside of these maxes, please consult a mod. We just ask that you only obligate yourself to what you can fulfill within the event’s schedule.


Are collabs allowed?
Yes. Collabs are allowed and we encourage writers and artists to do so. There will be a channel in the event server to aid in setting this up. Please note artist will only be allow to collab with writers, vice versa and sketch artist will only be allowed to collab with Drabble Writers, vice versa. It is our goal to ensure our newbie friendly role project expectations remain simple. Should our contributors need an accommodation outside of this please consult a mod.

Is humor allowed?
Yes. Humor will be allowed in this project. However we just ask contributors to keep in mind the horror or Halloween theme.

Will ships be allowed?
Yes. Ships are a consistent part of the BNHA fandom. Thus, we want to make sure contributors can indulge them. There may however be some restrictions regarding the contribution amount of certain ships. We would like to keep the content of this event balance.

Will we get to choose our own characters/ships?
Mods will do their best to provide you with your requested character or ship. It is for this reason on contributor applications we will be asking preference. However, this may not be guaranteed.

Are OCs allowed?
No. Only established characters from the anime will be featured in this event.

Are AUs allowed?
Yes. Because this is a horror centric event various AUs will be accepted to accommodate this theme.

Are we allowed to feature characters from the manga that haven't been introduced yet in the anime in our pieces?
Yes. All BNHA characters including those currently exclusive to the manga are permitted in this event.

Is there any banned or forbidden content?
No. Due to the horror theme of this event, there will be no banned content. We simply ask that you use trigger warnings. However, if you suspect that content that you want to provide may be controversial, problematic, or troublesome please consult a mod.

Can I share previews of my work on social media?
We ask that you refrain from sharing any previews until instructed by a mod. This will aid in keeping content exclusive to the holiday.



Application Questions

Are we allowed to apply for more than one position?
No. We ask that you only apply for one position to aid in the balancing of the event.

Are we required to provide pitches on the contributor application?
Yes. All contributors will be required to provide a minimum of two pitches on the contributor application.

Do we need a portfolio to apply?
Portfolios will be optional for Writer, Drabble Writer, and Sketch Artist roles. However are required for Artist and Merch Artist roles. A space on the contributor application will be provided for all roles.

Do I have to draw a certain style to be considered for this event?
Drawing within a certain style is not required. However all completed pieces must be digital. We will not be accepting traditional art at this time.

What are the sample requirements for each contributor role?
Sample requirements for contributor applications are as follows:

Writers
Minimum of three samples that are 2K words each, no more than 2.5K. Excerpts from longer works are allowed.
At least one of these samples must be related to the BNHA fandom.
There will be an option to link your portfolio.

Drabble Writers
Minimum of two samples that are 600 words each, no more that 2.5K. Excerpts from longer works are allowed.
At least one of these samples must be related to the BNHA fandom.
There will be an option to link your portfolio.

Artist & Merch Artist
Minimum of three samples, two of which must be fully colored with background.
At least one of these samples must be related to the BNHA fandom.
Link to your portfolio.

Sketch Artist
Minimum of three samples, line art, full/detailed color and background are not required. These can be doodles, sketches, comic, or even fully rendered art.
At least one of these samples must be related to the BNHA fandom.
There will be an option to link your portfolio.

What will mods be looking for on contributor applications?
Mods will be looking for the following from contributor applicants:

Writers
Literacy: Use of proper spelling and grammar.
Storyline: Unique and engaging story that appeals to readers.
Imagery: Ability to use detailed words and descriptions to create visuals in the reader's head.
Character Portrayal: Accurate characterizations that make characters identifiable by the fandom.

Drabble Writers
Literacy: Use of proper spelling and grammar.
Imagery: Ability to describe simple scenes, more complicated scenes are acceptable as well.
Character Portrayal: Accurate characterizations that make characters identifiable by the fandom.

Artist & Merch Artist
Clean Lineart & Color: Smooth lines and consistent color.
Balanced: Featured characters are proportionate and the image appears balanced.
Character Recognizably: Drawn characters are identifiable to those in the fandom.

Sketch Artist
Balanced: Featured characters are proportionate.
Character Recognizably: Drawn characters are identifiable to those in the fandom.
